High in the Bolivian highlands, the population of Tiwanaku sits like a frozen time capsule of Andean history. Cradle of the Inca civilizations. One of the most fascinating and mind-blowing sites in South America, the UNESCO-listed ruins are believed to be the ancient capital of the Tiwanaku Empire and mother of the Cuzco cultures, which once spanned Bolivia, Peru, Chile, and Argentina.
Early in the morning we get ready to go to your hotel for the pick-up and start the excursion to the Tiwanaku Archaeological Complex, it is a trip of 72 km. With stops for photo taking of the city of El Alto. After almost 2 hours of travel, we arrive at the archaeological site of what was once the mother of the Inca culture in South America, which in 2000 was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Once there we will visit the Ceramic Museum, important temples such as the Pyramid of Akapana, the Semi-Subterranean Temple, the Temple of Kalasasaya along with the famous Puerta del Sol, the Ponce Monolith and Puma Punku (a complex formed by blocks of rock of volcanic origin, some 7 meters high and weighing more than 100 tons). After having had a visit to the pre-Inca site, we will taste a typical lunch of the region (only in full day), with llama or trout meat. Later, we are ready to return to the city of La Paz, ending at the door of your hotel, (private only).
The best time to visit La Paz usually falls between May and September, when temperatures are milder and it rains less. From June to August, ideal conditions are also offered for climbing nearby mountains and glaciers.
It is recommended to wear comfortable clothing suitable for different weather conditions, as temperatures are changeable during the day and during the night, so it is recommended to wear layers such as sweaters and jackets along with hats and sunglasses to protect yourself from intense sunlight during the afternoons. And sunscreen that should not be missing.
In the restaurants here you can often find traditional Bolivian dishes such as salteñas (empanadas stuffed with meat), pique macho (a meat dish with sausages and sorfeadas vegetables) and variety of fast food restaurants of hamburgers, tacos and pizza.
